What changed in Hark

Hark is in a private beta. New builds reach testers through the app’s own updater — Check for Updates… in the Hark menu — and About Hark shows the build you have. This page lists what changed, newest first, in plain terms; internal work is left out. How updates arrive is on the help page.

September 22, 2026

  • Schedule view lists each day’s tasks with its events, and draws the current-time line through today’s rows, as Google does.
  • Meet with bolds the part of a name you typed and re-runs the lookup once your contacts have loaded, so a colleague no longer goes missing just after launch.
  • Year view’s columns and the Schedule page now match Google’s measurements, and an event label that was one weight too bold is corrected.
  • The local database, and the files that go with it, are now created readable by your user only.
  • The preference entries an earlier build left behind — one per launch, over a thousand on a long-lived install — are cleaned up at startup.
  • Errors from Google and from Hark’s own code are now written for people — no raw server text or internal codes in a message, in either language. Only errors that come from macOS itself are still shown in macOS’s own words.

September 21, 2026

  • The all-day strip opens showing everything and remembers if you collapse it.
  • The hour row grows and shrinks with the window instead of being a fixed height.
  • Meet with is an overlay on your calendar, not a filter — a colleague’s events are laid over your own week.
  • Avatars: a colour per person, and a brand’s mark fills its circle.
  • The invitation card in the reading pane now matches the look and spacing of the other cards.
  • Calendar’s pages, menus and toolbars measured against Google’s: the size of the top-bar controls, the ⋮ button beside each calendar, the margin beside the grid, and the all-day strip, which is white where it had been grey.
  • The quick-settings panel no longer overhangs its edge.

September 20, 2026

  • Subscribing to a calendar From URL works for the case that actually comes up: a webcal or https link to an .ics feed.
  • The event editor’s time fields open a list of times, not a clock face.
  • Quick-create dates fixed: picking another end day did not show, the end could be set before the start, and moving a timed event to another day could stretch it to eight days.
  • The week header, the current-time line and the order of reminders now match Google’s; the month grid centres the day number, labels the 1st with its month and no longer uses the system’s colours; Day view’s date header sits over its own column.
  • The Create menu and the event editor lost decoration Google’s do not have; the all-day date row no longer overflows its card.
  • Background refresh does less work: it no longer writes to disk what it has just written, and saves each page of sync results in one step rather than row by row.

September 18–19, 2026

  • Calendar opens with the working day in view, rather than scrolled to the current minute.
  • The invitation card for an .ics attachment now appears — it never had before — whichever way Gmail delivers the attachment.
  • Settings no longer shows the settings kept on this Mac in red, and two rows that claimed Hark lacks a feature it has are corrected.

September 14–15, 2026

  • The full event editor now matches Google’s, control for control.
  • A renamed primary calendar shows under its new name.
  • Gmail settings Hark cannot offer open Gmail on the web at the right account, instead of at whichever account the browser had.
  • The privacy policy now describes how your data is protected, not only what is collected.

September 10–12, 2026

  • Hark asks Google for four fewer permissions: 13 down to 9, and the restricted ones from 3 to 2. The consent screen is shorter; the one visible change is that the auto-forwarding switch in Settings, which never worked for an installed app, is now a read-only row.
  • The main window’s position is restored on launch — it had been saved every time and read back never.
  • Message bodies could show blank; fixed.
  • Compose: To and Cc accept a click anywhere in their row; a new Default text style setting; text weights matched to Gmail’s.
  • Reading pane: a line between messages, secondary text in Gmail’s grey, the sender name at Gmail’s weight, toolbar spacing and both ⋮ menus matched to Gmail; Bcc and full addresses in the expanded header, in a details popover that cannot outgrow the message.
  • The six Gmail settings Hark cannot offer are listed in Settings, with a link to the web, rather than absent.
  • The app rail no longer runs off the window’s left edge; the Calendar BETA badge is gone.
  • Two published security advisories against a library Hark uses to clean up HTML were addressed; neither affected Hark.

September 7–9, 2026

  • Mute has an Undo.
  • A discarded draft no longer leaves a paperclip on the conversation.
  • The Tasks list sorts by title when you ask it to.
  • An event whose guest list Google withholds no longer looks like an event with no guests.
  • Contact names are found for gmail.com address variants (dots and plus-suffixes).
