A Notion Mail alternative for Gmail on the Mac
Notion announced it would shut down Notion Mail on September 22, 2026. Your mail does not go with it: Notion Mail synced both ways with Gmail, so every message is still in your Gmail account, and any Gmail app can pick up where it left off. Hark Mail is one for the Mac — a native app on Google’s Gmail API, with Google Calendar and Google Tasks in the same window.

| Feature | Hark Mail | Notion Mail |
|---|---|---|
| Available today | Yes — in public beta | Notion announced it would shut down on September 22, 2026, on web, desktop and iOS |
| Your mail stays in Gmail | Yes — read and changed through Google’s Gmail API | Yes — it synced both ways with Gmail |
| Sorting the inbox | Your Gmail labels, filters and categories | Custom views and sorting of its own, which do not transfer to Gmail; AI auto label instructions had to be saved before the shutdown |
| Calendar | Yes — a week view you can edit, in the same window | Notion Calendar, a separate app, which is still available |
| Platforms | Mac (Apple silicon, macOS 14 or later); Windows next | Web, desktop and iOS, until the announced shutdown |
Notion’s article on the shutdown has since been taken down; the archived copy lists what was deleted and what stays in Gmail. Notion Calendar was not part of the announced shutdown.
When Hark Mail is not the right replacement
- You relied on AI auto labels. Notion suggests saving your auto label instructions and using a Custom Agent with Gmail access to label new mail. Hark Mail uses the labels and filters already in your Gmail.
- You have moved your email work to Notion agents. Notion says its Gmail AI Connector and agent mail tools keep working after the shutdown.
- You use several Gmail accounts every day. Hark Mail connects one account per Mac during the beta.
- You read mail on an iPhone or in a browser. Hark Mail is a Mac app today, with Windows next; it needs Apple silicon and macOS 14 or later.
Who Hark Mail is for
- You want a Gmail app that stays out of Gmail’s way. Labels, filters and threads are your Gmail’s own, so there is nothing to migrate in. The one exception is snooze: Google keeps it off the API, so Hark Mail holds the wake-up time on your Mac.
- You want mail and calendar in one native window. Inbox, a full Google Calendar week view you can edit, and Google Tasks, without a second app or a browser tab.
- You live in one Gmail or Workspace account. That is what the beta supports, and it is where Hark Mail is complete today.
- You want your data to stay between your Mac and Google. Hark Mail has no server for your mail; it talks to Google directly from your Mac.
Questions
Is Hark Mail related to Notion?
No. They are independent products from different companies. Hark Mail is made by Souplin Labs LLC and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Notion Labs, Inc.
Is my email gone with Notion Mail?
No. Notion’s help center said your email history stays in Gmail, because Notion Mail synced both ways with it. What it said would be deleted is anything that lived only in Notion Mail and was not saved by September 21, such as drafts, scheduled emails, snippets and auto label instructions.
Do I need to import anything into Hark Mail?
No. Hark Mail reads your Gmail directly from Google, so your mail, labels and filters are there when you sign in.
Can I keep using Notion Calendar?
Yes. Notion Calendar is a separate app that connects to Google Calendar, and Hark Mail shows the same Google Calendar, so an event you add in one appears in the other.
How much does Hark Mail cost?
Hark Mail is free during the beta. After the beta it is free for 30 days, then $5.99 a month for the whole app — mail, calendar and tasks.
